'Less is More'...A New Texas A&M Health Science Center Campus
From creation of the Texas A&M University College of Medicine by the Legislature in 1971 until the establishment of the standalone Texas A&M University System Health Science Center by the Board of Regents in 1999, medical education and research have grown dramatically. The Texas A&M Health Science Center now encompasses Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Biomedical Sciences, Dentistry and Pharmacy. The College of Medicine will increase in size from 100 students per class to 200 per class over the 5 years beginning in 2007. Growth in faculty, both in research and clinical, to match the student enrollment dictate the need for larger, modern facilities to support the next era of the HSC. Their response was to create a new 200 acre Health Science Center campus. Phase I includes a Health Professions Education Building, a Medical Research and Education Building, including Simulation Center and BSL3 Laboratory, plus a Central Utility Plant. New Medical students' orientation begins July 19, 2010.
